How Much Coffee Per Cup? The No-Math Version

If you have ever stood in the kitchen in the morning, bag in one hand and spoon in the other, wondering how much coffee to use, you are not alone. Most guides make it sound like a science project. It is not. Here is the no-math version.

The simple rule

Use one heaping tablespoon of ground coffee for each mug you plan to drink.

That is it. No scale, no chart, no calculator. Count the mugs, not the ounces.

  • One regular mug: one heaping tablespoon.
  • One extra-large mug: one heaping tablespoon, plus about half a tablespoon more.
  • A pot that fills four mugs: four heaping tablespoons.

A heaping tablespoon just means a spoon piled a little above the rim, the way you would naturally scoop from the bag. It does not need to be exact. Coffee is forgiving, and your taste will do the fine-tuning.

Then adjust by taste, not by rules

Brew a mug with the simple rule first, then notice how it tastes.

If it tastes weak or watery, add about half a tablespoon more next time. If it tastes too strong or sharp, use a little less next time. Change only one thing at a time, and you will find your amount within a couple of mornings.

That amount is your amount. It does not have to match anyone else's, and it does not have to stay the same forever. A sleepy Monday morning might call for a slightly stronger mug than a slow Sunday one, and that is perfectly fine.

Three small things that help

First, use fresh water and a clean brewer. Old coffee left in the pot or the filter will change the taste more than a slightly different spoonful will.

Second, if you buy ground coffee, spoon it straight from the bag. You do not need any extra equipment to get a good mug.

Third, keep your spoon in the same place. When the routine is easy, the morning stays easy, and that is half the point of a good cup of coffee.

A gentle place to start

If you are looking for an easy everyday coffee to try this with, Peaceful Sunrise, our Breakfast Blend, is made for slow mornings. Start with one heaping tablespoon per mug, take a slow sip, and adjust from there.

Good coffee should not ask you to do homework before breakfast. One spoon per mug, a taste, and a small adjustment. That is the whole method.
